What are Desiccant Breathers?

‘Desiccant’ refers to a substance that is a drying agent. DES case breathers remove humidity from the air as it’s passed through the filter, this stops air particles and moisture from entering the system. Desiccant breathers combine carbon, silica and filtration elements to control these air and water ingress levels. They are fitted by replacing the standard dust cap or OEM breather cap on applications.

A big cause of hydraulic machinery and components wearing down or breaking is from the machines breathing in dirty and wet air – over time, this leads to a massive decrease in the machine’s lifespan and reliability. Air, moisture and contaminants from the working environment are filtered out by DES case breathers to protect the power unit’s breathing system, this helps prolong the life of the power unit along with making it more efficient.

Whilst in shut down or active, silica beads in a DES Case Breather attract moisture and dirt. The desiccant’s layered filtration element removes the dirt while the silica beads absorb the water. Water left over that wasn’t trapped by the silica goes through a carbon layer which binds it and prevents the machine from breathing the water in.
